TNB celebrates Deepavali with a homecoming surprise for new son in law

Reprise teams up with TNB this Deepavali in a short film on family ties

Tenaga Nasional Berhad is celebrating Deepavali with a short film centering on the family theme titled Kurumbu Kudumbam. The film was created by IPG Mediabrands media marketing unit Reprise Malaysia.

The light-hearted film is based on the Indian cultural tradition of Thalai Deepavali, which is the first Deepavali celebrated by an Indian couple after their marriage, in the bride’s family home. The film follows a young groom Ramesh as he is left feeling slightly bewildered by strange behaviour on the part of his in-laws. However, a surprising reveal at the end makes for a heart-warming moment as Ramesh expresses his gratitude for the greatest gift received – that being his “cheeky” new family, or ‘Kurumbu Kudumbam’.

Stanley Clement, Managing Director of Reprise said, “Thalai Deepavali is something that is practiced, but isn’t known widely, even among Indians. We wanted to take the opportunity to highlight this practice as it demonstrates values of family ties and acceptance, and to show the similarities between cultures. It is these similarities that give us a better sense of connection and togetherness, and allows us to forge deeper understanding amongst each other as Malaysians.”

Datuk Wira Roslan Ab Rahman, Chief Corporate Officer of Tenaga Nasional Berhad said, “We wanted to play out the strong family ties that embodies us as Malaysians, and this theme is timely as the country embraces the spirit of acceptance. The film conveys a message of togetherness, acceptance and unity despite our many differences and quirks. This is a universal message that resonates with us all, and it was good to once again work with the team at Reprise to flesh out these nuances with a touch of light hearted mischief.”

Reprise is well known for producing some of the TNB’s most memorable advertisements, including ‘Rumah Epik Fantastik’ for Raya, and ‘The Coming Together’ at Chinese New Year, all of which have received rave reviews.

“As a keen proponent of nation building, TNB believes we all have a responsibility to foster unity, so the central theme of togetherness is shown in all three films. Viewers will also love the fact that beloved characters from before have little cameos,” added Stanley.

Fans of Jero the cat who originated from TNB’s 2017 Raya film ‘Dugaan Aida’ have been happy to see Jero in this year’s Raya film, and once again for Deepavali.

The film is scheduled to air across all TNB social media channels and free-to-air TV networks from 1st November.
