Malaysia’s ‘Pulang’ makes it debut as a Netflix original film

Pulang goes global with Netflix

Media Prima Berhad’s content creation arm, Primeworks Studios, exclusively premiered the film Pulang globally on Netflix, marking its debut to global audiences via the U.S. based streaming platform.

The film was initially released for Malaysian Netflix users on 28 September 2018 and premiered internationally as a Netflix Original film in October.

Produced by Primeworks Studios and directed by the award-winning Kabir Bhatia, Pulang tells the story of a fisherman from a small Malaysian village who takes a leap of faith and works on merchant ships travelling the world, hoping to return with riches for his wife and son.

Though he promised to return home, he was never seen again, leaving his grandson to uncover his story six decades later.

The film features Malaysian actors Remy Ishak and Puteri Aishah, and is filled with stunning cinematography, a majestic musical score and a beautiful story that unfolds across the world from Malaysia to Hong Kong to Liverpool.

Released in Malaysian cinemas on 26 July 2018 to massive critical acclaim, Pulang has received exceptional praise, with some describing it as “a wonderfully crafted story of love and romance,” .

The story was also transformed into a novel which was published before the film’s Malaysian premiere and now in the second reprint with a new cover. The Pulang novel represented Malaysia at the 2018 Frankfurt Book Fair in Germany.

Ahmad Izham Omar, Chief Executive Officer of Primeworks Studios, said: “One of our missions at Primeworks Studios is to bring Asian stories to the world.

“We are very excited to have Pulang on the extremely popular streaming service Netflix with millions of subscribers globally. We are now a proud producer of a Netflix Original film.

“This is an amazing achievement as a Malaysian film is now trending globally via the platform.

“We are happy that everyone around the world will be able to experience this wonderful film by Kabir Bhatia.”

Netflix has acquired 45 titles comprising Malay and Chinese content from Primeworks Studios.
