Earlier this week, Viu Malaysia put together a comprehensive discussion panel on women representation; while this talk is applicable to various industries, it primarily focuses on the creative content industry. Reinforcing this is the panelists that took the stage to share their views on the topic.
The four – Lisa Surihani, Julia Farhana, Iman Corinne, and Tehmina Kaoosji – are all female leads on Viu Originals. All four are considerable veterans in the film and TV series production space; further to that, all of them have been outspoken about needing more female presence in critical roles for their industry.
It is with Viu Malaysia that these four manage to star in stand-out roles. Of course, they hope more will get similar opportunities, both in front and behind the camera.
Highlights from the panel include:
- The representation of women in the local industry and how it is evolving thanks to local players and platforms such as Viu Malaysia
- The effects of the local entertainment industry on younger generation’s take on societal perceptions
- How Viu Malaysia is at the forefront creating stronger female roles in entertainment that are empowering on many levels; from the role of directors to tapping them as cast lead
- The change they like to see in women representation within the Malaysian creative content landscape
What this panel represents, while featuring actresses in titular roles, is not solely for film and TV. Other ecosystems within the creative industry are also creating opportunities for women representation. Until recently, two critical innovation drivers for Malaysia feature important women at their helms. It’s now a matter of time before more step up to the plate and add in a woman’s touch.
