As a show of support for Malaysian football, AirAsia has inked an agreement to be the official airline for the Malaysian League 2019-2020. This deal is exclusive and will see the low-cost carrier supporting Malaysian Football League (MFL) teams in various tournaments.
This includes the Piala Malaysia, Liga Super, Liga Premier, and Piala FA. The arrangement will see AirAsia offer discounted air-fares to MFL teams when they need to fly between states; this also include selected nations within the Southeast Asia region. As official airline, AirAsia also has the rights to sell match tickets; either as standalone or package deals with flights and/or hotels.
For MFL CEO, Kevin Ramalingam, the partnership is an exciting one as the MFL teams get to fly with one of the world’s best low-cost airlines. “We hope that, with this partnership, the local football scene will grow to even greater heights,” he added.
AirAsia Group CEO, Tony Fernandes, feels this this partnership is the next logical step forward. “Football is one of my passions and this love for the beautiful game runs through AirAsia as well. We currently sponsor the AirAsia KL Junior League to advance youth football in the Klang Valley. We also have our own youth team, PJ Rangers FC. Most recently, we chartered flights for Harimau Malaya fans to catch the AFF Suzuki Cup semi-finals and finals in Bangkok and Hanoi,” he shared.
While this arrangement is an opportunity for AirAsia to nurture Malaysian football even more, it also opens doors for MFL; specifically, to raise its branding in Malaysia and around the region.
