Telekom Malaysia Berhad’s (TM) IPTV service, HyppTV, broadcasted the Rio 2016 Olympic Games in 4K quality for the first time in Malaysia, at a special event in Sunway Pyramid yesterday.

The technology to broadcast the 4K quality content (Ultra HD) was made possible by Huawei as their technological partner and UniFi’s fiber optic network.

Currently, HyppTV’s content of Live TV channels and Video-On-Demand (VOD) is broadcasted in the 1920×1080 resolutions. The new 4K (Ultra-HD) quality will deliver 4 times the resolution (3840×2160) of the full HD standard viewing experience.

While HyppTv’s new viewing experience is currently only available for public viewing at Sunway Pyramid, Jeremy Kung, Executive Vice President, New Media, TM shared that the technology will soon be rolled out to the public.

For the public to experience the new 4K quality viewing they would need to buy a TV which is compatible with the technology and a TM’s new modem to enable to service.

When asked by reporters on the release date of its new technology Jeremy remained mum, sharing that the public’s response to its new 4K technology would be a key determining factor to its official rollout.

“As Malaysia’s official IPTV broadcaster of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games through HyppSports HD, HyppTV is Malaysia’s first TV operator capable of showcasing the Games in 4K quality. We are excited to offer this unique viewing experience to the public for the first time at Sunway Pyramid — for the whole duration of the Games — starting from Aug 9 until 23,” he shared.

In line with the games, TM is offering HyppTV subscribers’ access to all 42 Rio 2016 events from 21 July to 2 September 2016, on its 7 dedicated HD Rio 2016 channels (720-726.)
