Media Prima, who is holding the reins?
Things aren’t the same at Media Prima Bhd at least not in terms of perception. Where the group was always associated with Umno before, the last six months have seen a lot of changes.
UMNO no longer plays the puppet master to the media group after the Barisan Nasional government was toppled on May 9 in the general election.
Though UMNO still holds a 19% stake in Media Prima it no longer has any political clout which means no more government contracts and funds being pumped into the company.
Taking cognisance of the changes, sources say the political party may exit Media Prima if it gets a good deal.
Towards this end, it is notable that Tun Daim Zainuddin, who ran Media Prima in the 1980s, recently denied that he is looking to take control of the media company once again.
He was reported as saying that while Umno is looking to sell its stake in Media Prima, he was not interested in controlling a media empire again.
Despite this there have been rumours that parties close to Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) are keen on taking control of Media Prima.

After 20 years of evolving technology, shifting market trends, and adapting to changing consumer behaviour, the media landscape has nearly reached saturation.
We’ve optimised to the fullest, providing advertisers with abundant choices across technology, platforms, data-driven marketing, CTV, OTT, DOOH, influencer marketing, retail, etc.
Media specialists have diversified, but with more options comes the challenge of maintaining income growth. The industry is expanding, but revenue isn’t keeping pace.
Now, we’re at a TURNING POINT: time to explore and harness new sustainable revenue streams. While GroupM forecasts a 7.8% global ad revenue growth in 2024, challenges like antitrust regulation, AI and copyright issues, and platform bans persist.
Collaboration is key: partnerships that thrive on synergy, shared values, and aligned goals are becoming increasingly essential.
Hence, the Malaysian Media Conference, in its 20th year, has assembled the partners and players under one roof on October 25 for a day of learning, sharing, and exploring.
