(Marketingmagazine.com.my)- DBKL is going right to the source of illegal advertisements by imposing a steeper fine to premise owners highlighted in the advertisements.
Premise owners, such as shopping complexes and exhibition halls advertised in the illegal advertisement now face a possibility of suspension or termination of their business licence.
In an interview with The Star, DBKL Licensing and Petty Traders Management Department director Datuk Ibrahim Yusof shared,
“Many of the advertisements put up are by private business owners and exhibition organisers.
“Although the owners or event organisers put up the ads through a third party, the premises owner must still take responsibility.
Datuk Ibrahim shared that previously when seeing company names in illegal banner or posters they would send two warning notices followed by a compound.
The harsher penalty was required to direct illegal advertisers to the proper channels such as newspapers and out-of-home billboards to advertise.
In the report, Ibrahim also added that DBLK was planning to increase their maximum compound from RM2,000 to RM50,000 as a deterrent.
According to the report, DBKL removed 1.3 million illegal posters, banners, bunting and stickers last year.
A sight for sore eyes, these illegal ads not only clutter the streets but those that are simply slapped onto buildings end up leaving a sticky residue when removed. Countries such as Singapore have set up preventative measures by using anti-stick paint curb this unsightly problem.

MARKETING Magazine is not responsible for the content of external sites.
After 20 years of evolving technology, shifting market trends, and adapting to changing consumer behaviour, the media landscape has nearly reached saturation.
We’ve optimised to the fullest, providing advertisers with abundant choices across technology, platforms, data-driven marketing, CTV, OTT, DOOH, influencer marketing, retail, etc.
Media specialists have diversified, but with more options comes the challenge of maintaining income growth. The industry is expanding, but revenue isn’t keeping pace.
Now, we’re at a TURNING POINT: time to explore and harness new sustainable revenue streams. While GroupM forecasts a 7.8% global ad revenue growth in 2024, challenges like antitrust regulation, AI and copyright issues, and platform bans persist.
Collaboration is key: partnerships that thrive on synergy, shared values, and aligned goals are becoming increasingly essential.
Hence, the Malaysian Media Conference, in its 20th year, has assembled the partners and players under one roof on October 25 for a day of learning, sharing, and exploring.
