The final print issue of The Star R.AGE published on Tuesday (27 March 2017)
The Star’s weekly youth pullout has been a staple for the news publication for close to 10 years and on Tuesday the newspaper announced that it would be discontinuing its weekly print edition.
In a letter penned on the R.AGE’s last issue, Editor Ian Yee shared that the decision to stop its print edition was made so that the team could focus on producing more multimedia content and investigative series.
Last year the platform’s documentary series ‘Predators In My Phone’, which exposed the issue of pedophilia and child sexual grooming in Malaysia, received over 3.6 million views. Apart from producing the documentary series the team followed up with a 6 month-long campaign which contributed to the tabling of the Sexual Offences Against Children Bill 2017, announced this week.
Rather than being confined to one section R.AGE’s investigative pieces will now be published throughout the newspaper, The Star Online and R.AGE’s Facebook page.
“Even though we can’t sustain a weekly edition at the moment, print is still a very powerful platform which will evolve to serve different functions (as did radio and television), so we plan to continue utilizing it, only in a more strategic, fluid manner that will complement our multimedia documentaries” Ian shared in his editor’s note.
The Star has been ramping up its online content and most recently The Star Online portal achieved its highest number of unique visitors in its 21-year history. Between Feb 15 and March 16, 2017, the portal registered more than 8.03 million unique visitors and over 65.7 million page views.
