Primeworks Studios and WAU Animation announced that Ejen Ali The Movie took the number one spot in Malaysia’s box office charts with a collection of more than RM1.86 million within just one day of its theatrical release in three countries.
Much has been discussed about 2019 emerging as the year of Malaysian animation with the release of three big feature films, and true to form Ejen Ali The Movie takes on the mantle this school holiday season by beating stiff competition from popular international films.
Powered by Tenaga Nasional Berhad and in partnership with Mydin and Pediasure, invaded 162 cinema locations in Malaysia, Singapore, and Brunei simultaneously on 28 November 2019.
Datuk Ahmad Izham Omar, Chief Executive Officer of Primeworks Studios said, “We are absolutely blown away by the incredible response Ejen Ali The Movie is receiving in theatres. We have received so many positive reviews not only from the public on social media but personally I’ve been getting so many calls and messages about how much family and friends loved the movie and how they are so proud of a truly Malaysian masterpiece. This is a great time to be proud of what Malaysians can do. This is not just our success, this is Malaysia’s success! Thank you, Malaysia!”
Datuk Ahmad Izham Omar added, “In fact, this is indeed an iconic and memorable moment for Malaysian cinema as three of the Top 5 movies in the country were all locally produced with Wira at No. 3 and Pusaka at No. 5. This greatest achievement clearly proves that our local productions and films have reached a new level where it can compete and outstrip the performance of international films.”
“Thank you to all fans and fellow Malaysians for making Ejen Ali The Movie number one! I admit I was apprehensive about going directly against such strong competition during our movie’s release period, especially the Hollywood titles. But all of you have proven that as Malaysians you have our backs indeed, truly in the spirit of #KitaJagaKita. We hope the movie will continue its successful run in theatres so that we can keep creating the best from Malaysia,” added Usamah Zaid Yasin, Chief Executive Officer of WAU Animation and Director of Ejen Ali The Movie.
The animation follows 12-year-old Ejen Ali, who after being accidentally recruited as a spy has now grown to embrace his role in secret agency Meta Advance Tactical Agency (MATA) to protect the futuristic city of Cyberaya from outside threats.
Ali is surprised to discover that he is no longer the only master of the Infinity Retinal Intelligence System (IRIS) gadget since MATA has now upgraded to IRIS Neo for all MATA agents.
When the new invention leads Ali to question his place and usefulness to MATA, he is approached by a rogue figure who claims to know about a surprising personal connection to Ali. Risking his loyalty to MATA, Ejen Ali embarks on a thrilling chase to unravel these mysterious links.
