Time to create Malaysian history

The sequel for Hantu Kak Limah came swooping into the cinemas as a smashing success recently.

The comedy-horror flick surpassed the RM37 million mark, breaking all box office records with a whopping RM32.5 million on its 18th day in cinemas.

The amount collected was almost double that of the previous highest-grossing Malaysian film Abang Long Fadil 2 which tallied RM18.15 million at the box office.

Shortly after, Munafik 2 stormed in to take the top spot with RM42 million to give new meaning to the word cinematic!
The roaring success of both movies goes to show that Malaysian audiences are starting to relish Malaysian content on a scale never seen before.

Hot on the heels of this trend, Viu Malaysia made a big splash at MIPCOM recently in Cannes with their Viu Original, The Bridge.

This licensed format from Endomol Shine is one of the leading lights in their portfolio of scripted dramas.

Here are a few nuggets about this Viu Original: the Scandinavian noir crime series written and directed by Hans Rosenfeldt has been reproduced into many remakes including a British-French adaptation, an American remake, and a Russian remake.

Thumbs up for the new Malaysian-Singaporean version. The series highlights five issues that cause chaos in both Malaysia and Singapore – inequality, human trafficking, money laundering, violence against women and children, and child labour.

Most of the production was done in Malaysia while the rest completed in Singapore.

The Bridge will be seen in over 30 countries from November 26 across Asia and the Middle East, making it one of the biggest sensations a Malaysian TV show will make on the international stage.

The key is distribution. Content players like Netflix and Hulu have enjoyed success from their original serials too, such as the critically acclaimed Black Mirror.

But now is the time to make our stories create endearing history for viewers across more countries than we can ever imagine!
