A Legacy Comes to an End
After eight decades of serving Kuala Lumpur’s creative community, Nanyang Art Supplies in Petaling Street is set to close its doors permanently.
This beloved stationery shop, a cornerstone for graphic agencies and design houses in the pre-digital era, will mark the end of an 81-year legacy with a final clearance sale this month.
A Treasure Trove for Artists
Established in 1943, Nanyang Art Supplies has been a treasure trove for artists and designers, offering a wide range of materials including acrylic paints, colour pencils, markers, charcoal sticks, and watercolour papers.
The shop has witnessed the evolution of Kuala Lumpur’s art scene, from the post-war period through to the digital age.
Final Farewell Sale
The news of the closure came through a viral Facebook post by YKwan Lau, whose grandparents founded the store.
Lau revealed that while the shop is currently closed, it will reopen for a two-day farewell sale on July 20 and 21, from 10 am to 4 pm. During this sale, customers can expect discounts of up to 75% off on remaining stock.
End of a Family Business
The reason for the closure, as mentioned by Lau in the comments, is the retirement of her uncle, who currently manages the business.
This decision marks the end of a family-run enterprise that has been passed down through generations.
Nostalgia and Memories
The announcement has stirred nostalgia among long-time customers and Kuala Lumpur residents.
Lau’s Facebook post has been shared over 1,200 times, with many commenters sharing fond memories of visiting the store during their childhood or as young professionals.
A Cultural Landmark Fades
Nanyang Art Supplies’ closure is not just the end of a business, but the fading of a cultural landmark.
It represents a shift in the city’s creative landscape, as digital tools increasingly replace traditional art supplies.
However, for many, the shop will be remembered as a place that nurtured creativity and provided the tools for countless artistic endeavours.
Last Chance to Visit
For those wishing to pay a final visit or take advantage of the closure sale, Nanyang Art Supplies is located at 136, Jalan Petaling, City Centre, 50000 Kuala Lumpur. The sale will take place on July 20 and 21, from 10 am to 4 pm.
A Colourful Legacy
As Nanyang Art Supplies prepares to close its chapters, it leaves behind a colourful legacy in Kuala Lumpur’s art history.
Its closure serves as a poignant reminder of the changing times and the importance of cherishing local institutions that have shaped our cultural landscape.
