Highlighting valiant humanitarian efforts across ASEAN
Maybank has chosen to celebrate Hari Raya this year through its “MYStories Raya 2018” campaign dedicated to showcase the power of humanity across ASEAN.
This campaign is an extension of Maybank’s “MYStories” introduced for the Merdeka celebrations last year which depicted the sacrifices of selected individuals in the police and armed forces.
This year, MYStories Raya 2018 highlights two exceptional individuals – Dr Mangku Sitepoe from Indonesia and Zurianty Sudin from Malaysia who have dedicated their lives by helping communities in need especially during trying times.
Maybank brought their humanitarian journeys to live with two videos released on Maybank’s official social media sites.
The two individuals provide inspiring stories which espouse values which are similar to Maybank’s mission of humanising financial services.
Their work has positively impacted the community they operate in as they were the first in line to lend a helping hand; be it to offer free medical treatments or providing shelters during the floods.
Dr Mangku Sitepoe (pic), 83, is a certified veterinarian and a general practitioner. Born and raised in a small village in North Sumatra, his interest to help the community begin during his childhood when there was lack of access to modern medicine facilities in his neighbourhood.
Although he started out as a veterinarian, he was shocked when the villagers frequently visited him seeking for medical advice.
This prompted him to further his education to become a certified general practitioner in efforts to serve the community better.
In 1996, Dr Mangku and six other doctors teamed up by setting up a charity clinic providing free healthcare to Jakarta’s poor.
Today, the clinic has 57 doctors who dedicate their time and effort to help the less fortunate communities. In the video, Dr Mangku says, “The reason why I’ve set up this clinic is because at that time in Jakarta, the poor did not have insurance, they were living by the side of the road with no one to help them. Poverty was high, and I decided to help.”
Zurianty Sudin (pic), 36, was inspired by her mother to be kind and helpful to people in need.
Despite struggling to put food on the table herself, her mother always welcomed relatives to their home when they needed a place to stay.
In an interview with Maybank, Zurianty shared about her year long experience helping the communities in Kampung Limau Kasturi, Gua Musang, Kelantan and her efforts in raising around RM20,000.00 to rebuild the lives of the victims after the devastating floods in 2014.
“My mother once said that the most important thing is being able to give even when you have nothing,” said Zurianty. “It teaches you to give unconditionally and not just when you are successful and wealthy,” added the mother of four.
