Hiring sentiments within the Advertising and Marketing sector continues to weaken, and talent in this industry may find it more difficult to switch roles as online hiring activity continues to decline annually across the region.
This is according to the Monster Employment Index (MEI), which reported negative growth between January 2016 and January 2017 in each market for the Advertising, Market Research, Public Relations, Media and Entertainment sector.
The MEI is a monthly assessment of online job hiring, showcasing industries and occupations with the highest and lowest growth in online recruitment. This data also includes figures from the Advertising and Marketing sector.
In the Philippines, the marketing and advertising industry recorded a 5% year-on-year growth. This was also the only market to report a positive growth in the region.
Malaysia accounted a 4% decline, while Singapore reported a 5% year-on-year decline, the highest dip amongst all three countries. Singapore also registered decline at -2% year-on-year for overall hiring across all sectors, resulting in further stagnation of its wider job market.

“The last few quarters have not been very promising for the marketing and advertising sector, as the job market continues to stagnate with companies shifting focus to strategy and operations,” said Sanjay Modi, Managing Director at Monster.com – APAC and Middle East.
“As technology becomes the mainstay of any business, new roles will emerge and greater emphasis will be placed on candidates with strong personalities that can adapt easily to fast-changing market conditions. Digital marketing strategists and UX/UI designers will be in demand and companies will seek talent who have the potential to create new sales channels and expand market share.”
The Monster Employment Index is a monthly gauge of online job posting activity, based on a real-time review of millions of employer job opportunities culled from a large representative selection of career websites and online job listings across Singapore, Malaysia and the Philippines. The Index does not reflect the trend of any one advertiser or source, but is an aggregate measure of the change in job listings across the industry.

We’ve optimised to the fullest, providing advertisers with abundant choices across technology, platforms, data-driven marketing, CTV, OTT, DOOH, influencer marketing, retail, etc.

Now, we’re at a TURNING POINT: time to explore and harness new sustainable revenue streams. While GroupM forecasts a 7.8% global ad revenue growth in 2024, challenges like antitrust regulation, AI and copyright issues, and platform bans persist.
Collaboration is key: partnerships that thrive on synergy, shared values, and aligned goals are becoming increasingly essential.
Hence, the Malaysian Media Conference, in its 20th year, has assembled the partners and players under one roof on October 25 for a day of learning, sharing, and exploring.
