Prime Minister underscores digital economy as a key driver for national prosperity

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has laid out a bold vision for Malaysia’s future, projecting that the digital economy could contribute up to 25.5% to the nation’s GDP.

Speaking at the launch of the National Artificial Intelligence Office at the Malaysian International Trade and Exhibition Centre in Kuala Lumpur, Anwar stressed the pivotal role of artificial intelligence (AI) in transforming industries and driving Malaysia toward becoming a high-income nation.

Digital Transformation to Propel Economic Growth

Anwar, who also serves as Malaysia’s Finance Minister, highlighted the rapid integration of AI across traditional sectors such as rubber, tin ore, and palm oil, as well as basic industries.

These advancements, he noted, are propelling Malaysia’s economy into new frontiers.

“If the World Economic Forum study on job opportunities projects nearly 100 million new workers globally by 2025, then for our country, AI may contribute up to 23% of GDP. With current growth momentum, it is expected to reach 25.5%,” Anwar explained, emphasising the pace of digital adoption as a critical factor in this leap.

Bridging the Digital Divide

While celebrating these advancements, Anwar acknowledged that the digital divide remains a pressing challenge.

He pointed out disparities between urban elites and rural populations, stressing that inclusivity is essential for equitable growth.

“This is, of course, reflected in our Malaysia Digital Economy Blueprint,” he said, reiterating the government’s commitment to addressing urban-rural inequalities and ensuring all Malaysians benefit from digital progress.

Raising the Bar on Digital Literacy

For Malaysia to achieve its high-income aspirations, Anwar underscored the need for a digitally literate population.

He emphasised that digital literacy is not just a requirement but a cornerstone of sustainable development.

“High income will only be achievable if driven by digital. This is why Malaysia stands among the few nations in the world with a dedicated Digital Ministry—it is crucial for our success,”  he added.

As Malaysia accelerates its digital transformation, the National Artificial Intelligence Office is expected to play a vital role in integrating AI across industries, driving innovation, and ensuring the nation’s competitive edge in the global economy.
