State Pushes for Global Recognition of Unique Culture and Tourism Boost

Penang is making strides in preserving its unique cultural heritage by seeking to add the Peranakan kebaya and its distinct breakfast traditions to UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

State Exco for Tourism and Creative Economy, Wong Hon Wai, announced this ambitious move as he opened the “Road to UNESCO – Nyonya Sarong Kebaya” exhibition and fashion show by Kenny Loh Couture.

The Peranakan kebaya, a traditional attire that has come to symbolise the fusion of cultures in Penang, is central to this bid.

Wong emphasised the global significance of the Nyonya sarong kebaya, noting that it represents more than just fashion—it stands as a testament to the state’s rich cultural tapestry.

Penang’s unique breakfast offerings, such as poh piah, nasi ulam, and laksa, will also be part of the UNESCO pitch, highlighting the region’s culinary heritage.

“This initiative underscores the global recognition of our cultural diversity and will pave the way for the kebaya and our breakfast culture to be celebrated worldwide,” Wong said.

He revealed that Penang’s application will be presented during the 19th session of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage in Paraguay this December.

A Collaborative Effort

Penang is taking a collaborative approach in its quest for global recognition.

Wong’s office is working closely with the National Heritage Commission and exploring international partnerships to promote Peranakan culture on the world stage.

OCBC Premier Banking has stepped up as a co-organiser for the event, with Northern Cluster Manager Alex Tan praising the meaningful cultural initiative.

The exhibition, running from October 11-17 at the OCBC Premier Banking branch in Beach Street, highlights the artistry of the Nyonya Kebaya.

Designer Kenny Loh hopes the display will bring the stunning collection of handcrafted pieces to greater heights, propelling the culture into the global spotlight.

As Penang’s push for UNESCO recognition gains momentum, this could be a major win for both local artisans and tourism, helping preserve and celebrate Peranakan heritage for generations to come.

By embracing its roots and showcasing its heritage globally, Penang is setting the stage for the world to take notice.
