TBWA\MCR Creative Exposes Brutality of Hostile Architecture

In a shocking revelation, it turns out that the streets you walk every day might be hiding a dark secret.

TBWA\MCR has partnered with HostileDesign.org to expose the cruel reality of hostile architecture in our urban environments.

Prepare to have your eyes opened to a world you never knew existed right beneath your feet.

The Silent War on Our Streets

Imagine trying to find a place to rest, only to be met with sharp spikes and uncomfortable surfaces at every turn.

This is the reality for countless homeless individuals in cities.

Hostile architecture, a sinister form of urban design, is being used to deter rough sleepers from finding shelter in public spaces.

“Life is hard enough for people forced to live on the streets,” says Gary Fawcett, Executive Creative Director at TBWA\MCR.

“We were shocked to discover this type of design exists and in some cases is commissioned by our own councils.”

The Art of Exposure

To bring this hidden issue to light, TBWA\MCR has taken a bold and graphic approach.

They’ve enlisted photographer Stuart Semple to create powerful images that fit perfectly into areas featuring hostile architecture.

These striking visuals show sleeping people being pierced by the very spikes meant to keep them away.

Starting July 29, these in-situ images will form the basis of a hard-hitting social media campaign.

The goal?

To open people’s eyes to the harsh realities faced by those living on the streets and encourage support for the hostiledesign.org campaign.

Your City’s Dark Side Revealed

Stuart Semple, the photographer behind these powerful images, explains, “Hostile design is so insidious that it’s often easy to miss the true intention of it.”

He believes that raising awareness is the crucial first step in changing this culture of exclusion.

“At the end of the day, design shouldn’t be perverted to harm the vulnerable,” Semple adds.

“City planners and designers should be using their talents to include, nurture and support communities.”

What You Can Do

As this eye-opening campaign spreads across social media, it’s time to ask yourself: what role can you play in creating a more inclusive urban environment?

By supporting the campaign, you can help shine a light on this hidden issue and work towards a future where our cities welcome all, rather than pushing away the most vulnerable.

Remember, the next time you walk down your city streets, look closely.

The architecture around you might be telling a story you never expected to see.
