Malaysia Drives EV Leadership with ASEAN’s Official Car
Proton unveiled its first electric vehicle (EV), the e.MAS 7, in a grand launch at the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre (MITEC) today, with Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim announcing its role as the official car for next year’s ASEAN Summit.
This milestone coincides with Malaysia’s Chairmanship of ASEAN, highlighting the nation’s commitment to inclusivity, sustainability, and regional leadership.
“e.MAS 7 will be our official car for the ASEAN Summit next year,” Anwar declared in his keynote speech that the vehicle represents more than just a technological achievement—it’s a bold statement of Malaysia’s aspirations to champion green innovation in line with its net-zero emissions goals.
Tanjung Malim: The Birthplace of Proton’s Electric Revolution
The e.MAS 7 will be manufactured at Proton’s state-of-the-art facility in Tanjung Malim, Perak.
This facility is poised to become the epicentre of Malaysia’s burgeoning EV industry.
Proton’s venture into electric mobility is a crucial step in Putrajaya’s broader ambition to position Malaysia as a regional hub for EV manufacturing and servicing.
The ASEAN EV market, projected to reach USD 2.7 billion (RM11.77 billion) by 2027, presents vast opportunities for growth.
Anwar reiterated the government’s call for global automakers to leverage Malaysia’s strategic location and skilled workforce to drive the region’s EV ecosystem forward.
e.MAS 7: A Beacon of Progress for ASEAN
Proton’s e.MAS 7 is more than just a car; it’s a symbol of Malaysia’s leadership in sustainable development.
As ASEAN nations collectively tackle climate change, the e.MAS 7 serves as a tangible representation of progress, promoting green mobility and reducing carbon footprints.
Anwar expressed confidence in Proton’s ability to inspire innovation and elevate Malaysia’s position on the global stage.
“This vehicle underscores our capacity not only to produce but to lead in EV technology,” he said.
A Star-Studded Launch
The e.MAS 7 launch was graced by top government leaders, including Deputy Prime Minister Fadillah Yusof, Transport Minister Loke Siew Fook, Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Zafrul Aziz, and Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad.
Their presence underscored the government’s unwavering support for Proton’s green agenda.
Fuelling a Sustainable Future
As Malaysia prepares to host the ASEAN Summit next year, the e.MAS 7 is set to turn heads as a futuristic, eco-friendly mode of transportation for world leaders.
This move reflects Malaysia’s ambition to align economic growth with environmental sustainability, paving the way for a greener future for ASEAN and beyond.
With Proton at the wheel of innovation, Malaysia is proving that the journey toward sustainability begins at home.
