Digital Ministry Partners with KUSKOP to Ensure SMEs Embrace Tech Affordably and Inclusively

In a bold move to bridge the digital divide and empower small and medium enterprises (SMEs), Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo announced the drafting of policies and innovative solutions to facilitate SME digital transformation.

Speaking at the “Future Skilling Through AI, Digital, and Green Economy” dialogue session held at the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre (MITEC), Gobind outlined the collaborative efforts with the Ministry of Entrepreneur and Cooperatives Development (KUSKOP) aimed at ensuring that technology integration becomes both achievable and sustainable for SMEs.

Charting a Path to Affordable Tech Integration

Acknowledging the steep learning curve and financial strain many SMEs face, Gobind stressed that affordability and practical support are at the forefront of this initiative.

“We’ve had meetings where proposals were brought forth, and discussions with multiple stakeholders are ongoing,” he said.

The Ministry’s goal is clear: by year’s end, a roadmap to streamline SME access to digital tools and infrastructure will be set in motion, empowering businesses to stay competitive.

A Holistic Framework for Digital Adoption

Central to this comprehensive policy is the MyMAHIR platform, described by Gobind as a “living document” to serve as a dynamic repository of insights, challenges, and solutions related to digital readiness across sectors.

This interactive tool aims to keep policy discussions relevant and adaptive, incorporating real-time feedback from businesses navigating the digital shift.

Creating Value through Talent and Innovation

Gobind underscored that technology alone cannot drive progress; a skilled workforce is essential for genuine transformation.

“Digitalisation isn’t a luxury; it’s a necessity. We need to ensure no SME is left behind as we transition to a tech-driven economy,” he stated, reinforcing the government’s commitment to future-proof Malaysia’s workforce.

Talent development initiatives are integral to this vision.

By enhancing digital literacy and expanding training in artificial intelligence (AI) competencies, the Ministry aims to create a resilient and adaptive labour market.

“We must prepare our people for what’s coming. Without a skilled workforce, the technology itself won’t create value,” Gobind stressed.

Laying the Groundwork for AI Excellence

A centrepiece of the upcoming policy framework is the establishment of the National AI Office.

This dedicated body will oversee AI adoption strategies, ensuring that Malaysia not only keeps pace with global technological trends but also maximises the socioeconomic benefits of AI deployment.

The office will focus on research, development, and the implementation of AI-driven practices that align with the nation’s economic priorities.

Looking Ahead: December 12 as a Turning Point

Marking December 12 on the calendar, the final policy framework launch promises to be a significant milestone.

This strategic rollout will signal Putrajaya’s unified approach to digital empowerment, encompassing cost-effective solutions, comprehensive training, and coordinated governance under the National AI Office.

The push towards digitalisation represents more than just an economic imperative; it is a pledge to future-proof SMEs, ensuring they are equipped not just to survive but to thrive in an increasingly tech-centric world.

As Malaysia positions itself as a leader in digital adoption, the government’s message remains clear: the journey to digital transformation must be inclusive, practical, and sustainable.
