MyBurgerLab’s latest creation via: Twitter
Once again the Nasi Lemak finds itself in a crossborder debate, just this time, it’s also stuck between two buns…of the breaded kind.
Following the release of Singapore McDonald’s Nasi Lemak Burger in conjunction with its National Day on August 9, Malaysian burger joint MyBurgerLab has seen the fast-food chain’s take on the culturally crafted burger and decided to raise it with their very own take on it — the Nasi Lemak Ayam Rendang Burger — which they unveiled via their official Twitter account.
With nothing more than “Dear Singapore, nice try, but…” as the teaser’s copy, MyBurgerLab’s latest creation stands front and centre with a Jalur Gemilang in the background.
It’s clear the burger wizards at the joint aren’t playing around with their latest specialty burger, as indicated by their tweet which read: You know we mean business when we bring out the flag.
In a news report by Channel NewsAsia, a rep from MyBurgerLab pointed out that the idea for a Nasi Lemak burger had long been brewing — three years to be precise. The tipping point between going with the idea and shelving it was came courtesy of social media.
“We actually had this recipe since three years ago, but we decided not to launch it because we didn’t want to put out a product, and possibly even destroy something we knew so many people have history with,” says MyBurgerLab co-founder Renyi.
“But after McDonald’s released theirs, a lot of people started tagging us in posts and we thought, ‘OK, let’s listen and give the people what they want’. This really fell in line with what MyBurgerLab is all about — listening to our customers and doing our best to put out products we know they want and will love.”
The rise of fusion cuisine has been steady in recent years as more and more Malaysians are exposed to the idea of enjoying familiarity, with an element of surprise.
Says Renyi: “Honestly, I don’t even know what fusion is exactly! But from experience, I know that what people look for in fusion [food] is a ‘twist’. Give them what they know with a twist.”
In spite of all the buzz surrounding the anticipated Nasi Lemak Ayam Rendang burger, the gourmet burger joint are keeping their feet firmly planted to the ground in the area of its sales.
“At the end of the day, we are a gourmet burger place and make everything from our buns to our pickles in-house. So we’re looking to be able to sell about 100 burgers a day at all four of our outlets. After which, we’ll see what happens. I have a feeling this one may just end up on our staples menu though,” said Renyi.
The new MyBurgerLab will hit stores this Friday August 4th.

After 20 years of evolving technology, shifting market trends, and adapting to changing consumer behaviour, the media landscape has nearly reached saturation.
We’ve optimised to the fullest, providing advertisers with abundant choices across technology, platforms, data-driven marketing, CTV, OTT, DOOH, influencer marketing, retail, etc.
Media specialists have diversified, but with more options comes the challenge of maintaining income growth. The industry is expanding, but revenue isn’t keeping pace.
Now, we’re at a TURNING POINT: time to explore and harness new sustainable revenue streams. While GroupM forecasts a 7.8% global ad revenue growth in 2024, challenges like antitrust regulation, AI and copyright issues, and platform bans persist.
Collaboration is key: partnerships that thrive on synergy, shared values, and aligned goals are becoming increasingly essential.
Hence, the Malaysian Media Conference, in its 20th year, has assembled the partners and players under one roof on October 25 for a day of learning, sharing, and exploring.
