A new award to bridge the gap between academia and the workforce

Part of the answer, according to Hardesh Singh, founder of PopDigital and executive director of The sCooler Awards, is to “Put young people right in the thick of the action. We don’t give young people enough credit. These people are resilient, innovative, spontaneous, creative – all they need is an opportunity to shine.”

With the aim of creating a platform for students to sharpen their skills in the real world and receive feedback from industry professionals, The sCooler Awards was launched in late October.

Students can submit class assignments and personal projects for the three categories – Idea, Craft and Special open to them. All work will be judged according to the same criteria:

  1. Relevance,
  2. Originality, and
  3. Quality of execution

Creative Chairman of The sCooler Awards, Edward Ong, said, “Young people everywhere are hungry to make a difference. They want to create ideas that are meaningful, fulfilling and ultimately, make the world a more interesting place. This is where it’s all happening. This is the platform that will launch the next generation of creative innovators.”

“We’re excited to have judges who care enough and are passionate about student work,” says Hardesh. “This is a tough-to-please jury. Winning a sCooler Award will definitely be a feather in the cap for any student, lecturer or communications school.”

The awards presentation, set for 24 February 2017 (venue TBC), will see a series of talks from industry leaders including Alvin Teoh, ECD of Naga DDB; VJ Anand, ECD of BBDO, and Stanley Clement, Managing Director – Social & Digital of IPG Mediabrands. They will be speaking on the theme ‘Make Everything Better’.

The sCooler Awards is still accepting submissions from students studying in Malaysia. Closing date for entries is 30 Dec 2016. Any work produced from 1 Jan 2015 to 30 Dec 2016 is eligible. More details can be found at www.thescoolers.com and www.facebook.com/thescoolers.
