Tough Time For Marketing Industry

Monster(Marketingmagazine.com.my) -The Advertising and Marketing industry continued to face a downward annual decline in hiring activity at the end of 2015, according to the latest Monster Employment Index (MEI) report for Singapore, Malaysia and the Philippines.

Marketing and Communication talent are also less in demand in Singapore and the Philippines than the same time period a year ago.

In Malaysia, the industry has also significantly declined at -19% year-over-year, while in the Philippines the sector’s activity has dropped by half (-49%) annually.
When looking at Marketing and Communications jobs, Malaysia is the only market where talent is most in demand, registering 1% growth year-over-year.

In Singapore, these jobs have declined -11% year-on-year, while the Philippines has dipped by -43%. Further, online hiring in the Advertising, Market Research, Public Relations, Media and Entertainment sector has declined by -5% between December 2014 and 2015 – a slight dip from the -4% reported for November annually.

“The marketing industry – and advertising, PR and media agencies in particular – are facing a bit of turmoil amid intense competition for talent and contracts, which has affected the pace of online hiring activity. Once again, Malaysia is the only market that has shown a slight positive trend for recruiting marketing and communications talent,” said Sanjay Modi, Managing Director of Monster.com (India, Middle East, Southeast Asia, Hong Kong). 

The Monster Employment Index is a monthly gauge of online job posting activity, based on a real-time review of millions of employer job opportunities culled from a large representative selection of career websites and online job listings across Singapore, Malaysia and the Philippines. The Index does not reflect the trend of any one advertiser or source, but is an aggregate measure
of the change in job listings across the industry.

Malaysia Highlights:

• Malaysia registered a -33% year-over-year decline in hiring in December 2015.

• The Production/ Manufacturing, Automotive and Ancillary sector saw the least decline at -9% year-over-year, while the Logistic, Courier/ Freight/ Transportation, Shipping/ Marine sector witnessed the steepest decline at -35%

• Demand for Marketing & Communications professionals took the lead registering 1% year-over-over growth, while Software, Hardware, Telecom roles remained weakest at -66%
