Proton sales up 75%, to become the second best-seller in April 2019

Perusahaan Otomobil Nasional Sdn Bhd (PROTON) has once again returned to the top-2 best-selling automotive brand in April 2019, with its sales surging by 75 per cent year-on year, or 14.1 per cent month-on-month (m-o-m), to 7,011 units in April 2019.

The company finished second in monthly sales for the first time since February 2016.

In a statement today, Proton said the strong sales performances by Proton Saga and Proton X70 were the main drivers for the achievement, but sales also received a boost following the official launch of the 2019 Proton Iriz and Persona on April 23.

“This was achieved despite a downturn in total industry volume (TIV)  that contracted by 6.2 per cent m-o-m, making Proton the only automotive brand ranked in the top five to record positive growth,” it said.

Meanwhile, Proton said the Saga in fact, had displaced Proton X70 as the best-selling Proton model with 3,047 units being sold in April 2019, the first time it had breached the 3,000 unit barrier since August 2018 during the zero-Goods and Services Tax three month grace period.

“The increase in sales is a reflection of the quality improvements that continue to be made to the car, as well as the increase in customer and sales service quality being delivered at 79 3S/4S outlets, the most of any Original Equipment Manufacturer in Malaysia, in PROTON’s sales network, ” it said.

On the Proton X70, Proton said it remained the best-selling sport utility vehicle (SUV) in Malaysia this year, taking up 24 per cent share of the overall segment.

“With 11,133 units delivered so far in 2019, Proton X70 is the champion in premium SUV category (C-segment) and the champion in executive SUV category (price above RM100,000),” it added.
