Media Prima computer systems hijacked, hackers want RM26 million

Media Prima hit by ransomware attack

Media Prima Bhd had a ransomware attack on Nov 8, locking out its computer systems.

A report by the Edge Financial Daily said that the hackers demanded Media Prima pay 1,000 bitcoins to access its email system again.

A bitcoin is a digital currency, with one bitcoin currently worth US$6,297.21 as at 11.50am today (Nov 13), according to Google.
This means that the attackers are demanding a ransom of RM26.42mil.

When contacted, Media Prima did not confirm or deny whether there was a ransomware attack.

Ransomware is a form of cyberattack that shuts down the users computer systems by encrypting its data and demanding a ransom for its release.

This trend is on the rise partly due to cryptocurrencies which makes  hackers untraceable.

It is not immediately known whether Media Prima’s data has been breached, and whether the media group would be suffering financial losses due to the ransomware attack.

Sources say that Media Prima will not be paying the ransom and they have migrated to another system called G Suite.

Media Prima owns and operates four free-to-air television stations, namely TV3, TV9, ntv7 and 8TV, as well as four radio stations, namely Fly FM, Hot FM, One FM and Kool FM.

It also owns The New Straits Times Press (M) Bhd, which constitutes three newspapers, New Straits Times, Berita Harian and Harian Metro.
