DATO’ MAH WENG KWAI IS THE NEW CHAIRMAN OF ASA

The Advertising Standards Malaysia (more widely known as ASA) is happy to announce the appointment of Dato’ Mah Weng Kwai as its new Chairman.   He succeeds  En. Azizul Kallahan who served ASA for 3 years.

With his illustrious career as a practicing lawyer to being an esteemed member of the judiciary as a judge at the Count of Appeal, Malaysia, Dato’ Mah is widely sought after as an advisor and arbitrator.  He is currently the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Securities Industry Dispute Resolution Center, a company under the Securities Commission of Malaysia.

ASA is Malaysia’s independent self-regulator of advertising across non-broadcast and non-networked mediums; printed newspaper and magazines, posters, direct mails, packaging, leaflets/brochures, cinema commercials and billboards.  ASA ensures the adherence of self-regulation by applying the Malaysian Code of Advertising Practice and sets industry standards for legal, decent, honest, socially responsible and truthful advertisements.  Its role is to act to resolve difficulties between members of the industry, which arise over the Code as well as to regulate advertisements whether as a result of complaints by members of the industry or members of the public.  ASA is a protector of consumer rights.

ASA is set up under the auspices of and supported by its five (5) Constituent Members;

  • Association of Accredited Advertising Agents Malaysia (4As)
  • Malaysian Advertisers Association (MAA)
  • Malaysian Newspaper Publishers Association (MNPA)
  • Malaysian Media Specialists Association (MSA)
  • Outdoor Advertising Association of Malaysia (OAAM)

By virtue of its governing document, the representatives of its Constituent Members appoint a Chairman who is not a member from the advertising or allied marketing communications industry.

Dato’ Mah said “I am encouraged with this appointment.  This opportunity will enable me to share and apply my perspectives, legal knowledge and experience when dealing with  matters brought up to the Board”.

The ASA Constituent Members are honored Dato Mah accepted this position.  ASA’s standing in the industry is reinforced by his presence and leadership.
