Creative Coaching is the new chant

Rodd Chant’s career has seen him move to Southeast Asia a total of five times, maybe six, he’s lost count.

He recently started a micro-sized creative studio, POTENT, working on projects worldwide, using Bangkok as his home base.

“Potent is not an ad agency, I prefer to call it a ‘creative something’, the mission is to provide a nimble creative solution to brands looking for something different.”

Previously, in this region, Rodd has held roles such as ECD of Publicis, Singapore, ECD of Bannistar Singapore and Tokyo, and most recently CCO at Vivaldi, Bangkok.

Back in the day, he was a Senior Creative at Batey Singapore and BBDO Singapore. He was also the EVP/ECD at FCB, New York. He has done the rounds.

More importantly, Rodd has established himself as a Creative Coach, working with advertising, design, and other creative career professionals to help them grow and sustain their careers.

He coaches Creative Directors and recently launched a copywriting workshop called The Write Stuff. He also coaches brand marketers and people in non-creative agency management roles. More here.

“There’s a real lack of coaching and mentoring for Creative Directors. In 2019, I wrote a post on LinkedIn titled – How To Be A Creative Director Without Sucking At It. Overnight it got 800,000 views, 10,000 comments, and around 600 shares. That was my inspiration to start coaching Creative Directors that same year.”

“But there is also a need for coaching and mentoring across the board, for creatives at all levels and those in non-creative roles. Another area that I believe needs attention is copywriting. Sure, AI is a threat, but not to good writers. Anyone serious about sustaining a career as a copywriter should be focused on honing their skills and staying ahead of the pack.”

Before stumbling into advertising at 25, Rodd was a punk rock bass player, a roadie, a concert lighting designer and operator, a sound engineer, a kitchen hand, a clothing brand owner and designer, a courier, and a sales rep in the music business.
