Combine food, industry one-liners, 20 festive TV commercials (TVC), networking while being cleared of a virus infection, with over 100 industry creatives and you get a lunch-turned-celebration. This was the scene at the 2020 Chinese New Year (CNY) Luncheon hosted by MARKETING Magazine.

The 2020 CNY Luncheon was held at the Sime Darby Convention Center

Over the years MARKETING Magazine’s coverage and polling of the Best CNY TVCs,  Best Merdeka TVCs and Best Raya TVCs has had growing success and traction. The number of respondents has grown from a few hundred to over a thousand in recent years.

This year, 1137 respondents participated in our readers’ online poll for their favourite Malaysian CNY TVCs of the Year and the top 20 winners were announced last week. To commemorate the winners, and capitalise on the auspiciousness of the date 20.2.2020, for the first time a luncheon was organised at the  Sime Darby Convention Center. Winning brands were recognised on stage with a framed certificate, along with the agency and production house that created the TVC.

CEO of MARKETING Magazine, Professor Harmandar Singh welcomed the guests before announcing MARKETING Magazine’s 2020 events calendar.

It was no Oscars but there were speeches from winners and one of them even stuck true to the awards style by reminding everyone of climate change.

As a means of precaution, given the frenzy surrounding COVID-19, plenty of hand sanitizers and face masks were made available at the venue and an additional four stand fans were placed inside the lunch hall to enhance air circulation. Representatives from MERCY Malaysia were also present at the event as they checked people’s temperatures and travel history while mingling around.

Vice President of MERCY Malaysia, Associate Professor Dr. Shalimar Abdullah was also at the lunchean, assisting other MERCY volunteers to check the attendees’ temperature using a contactless thermometer.

Creative people, when they aren’t creating, are most probably spending time appreciating or learning from what other creatives have created. The luncheon embodied that energy with everyone celebrating each other’s success.
