International Times to cease operations

International Times print edition to end on October 16

A fifty year old Sarawak based Chinese newspaper, the International Times will cease operations come October 16 mainly due to  competition from online news portals and production costs.

International Times managing director and editor in-chief Datuk Wee Kok Hui, however, said the newspaper will continue with its online site.

“We are grateful for the support we have had from all our readers, and we will continue to bring about the latest news and promotion for everyone,” he said in a statement late yesterday.

The paper will also not be retrenching any employees.

He said over the past few years the paper’s daily circulation had dropped substantially, due to competition from other major Chinese daily newspapers, like Sin Chew Daily and See Hua Daily, and online news portals. In addition productions costs had increased with revenue from advertisements going down.

International Times was first published in 1968 and is linked to the family of the late Tan Sri Wee Boon Ping, a business tycoon.
