A Peranakan tradition becomes inspiration for Perodua and SPIN

Prosperity is a concept often explored in Chinese New Year films. This year, Perodua chose to highlight a unique Peranakan tradition – that of opening the main door first thing on Chinese New Year day to usher prosperity into the home.

Interestingly, the Baba Nyonya community is so particular about this that once the main door is closed on the eve, it will not be opened until New Year’s morning.

In the film, Norman, a young boy who has not visited the family home in a while keeps recalling his Nkong’s (grandfather’s) words and embarks on a strangely bizarre journey to beat the closing door.

Though he starts off with wanting to go back only for the ang paus, he soon learns that there is more to this unique cultural tradition. The film also features Baba Cedric Tan, a Peranakan culture enthusiast, in the main role of Nkong.

After the last 2 years, we know everyone is excited for this festive season more than ever, as they reconnect with family and friends. With a simple and uplifting message of coming together for tradition, it aims to remind us that all we need for a wonderful celebration is shared moments with community and the ones we love,” said Sulasi bt Haji Mahadi, Deputy General Manager (Corporate Relations and Communications), Perodua.

This Perodua festive film is a collaboration between SPIN Communications and Reservoir Production, currently live on all of Perodua’s social media pages.
