Leading the war against counterfeit goods by tapping into the power of Big Data is e-commerce giant Alibaba.

The new ‘Alibaba Big Data Anti-Counterfeiting Alliance’ has over 20 of today’s top brands as members including international brands namely Louis Vuitton, Samsung and Mars. According to the company the new alliance will bring together industry and technical know-how as a key strategy to keep its platforms free of pirated goods.

“The most powerful weapon against counterfeiting today is data and analytics, and the only way we can win this war is to unite,” Alibaba’s chief platform officer, Jessie Zheng, shared in the company’s news release.

The members will distribute among the alliance their own anti-counterfeiting expertise and data to bolster the efforts of the entire group.

This is one of the many efforts by Alibaba against the selling of fake goods. Last month the brand in a joint operation with the Chinese Law enforcement helped to close down 417 production rackets, arrested 332 suspects and seized fake goods valued at RMB 1.43 billion ($207.2 million), through the use of its data.

Locally the company, last year, took a majority stake in Malaysia’s major e-commerce player Lazada.
