SPH FALLS

Asia’s leading media organisation, main board-listed Singapore Press Holdings (SPH),  has been downgraded by DBS Group Research to “fully valued”, from “hold” previously, and cutting its target price by 60 cents to $2.79.

This come after SPH saw earnings tumble 45.2% to $28.9 million in for the third quarter ended May on the back of weak advertising expenditure.

“Online disruption continues to dampen the core media business, which is resulting in falling ROE as well as a lower earnings,” says Yeo. “Readers are shifting away from traditional newsprint, resulting in lower circulation and demand for newsprint. The outlook for adspend is likely to continue to be lacklustre,” says DBS lead analyst Alfie Yeo.

Core earnings dropped 17% to $67 million, while revenue fell 11% to $260 million.

SPH recently struck a licensing partnership with US-based global business news source Business Insider (BI) to operate the latter’s Singapore and Malaysia editions.

BI Singapore and Malaysia will offer local news, business and lifestyle stories, as well as content from BI’s newsrooms around the globe, including Australia, Germany, Britain and its headquarters in New York. BI in Singapore and Malaysia was previously operated by Malaysian media company Rev Asia Berhad.
