Malaysians searched for govt’s aid plan BR1M in 2017

The top-of-mind topics, people, music, movies, series, gadgets and events of the year, searched on Google

The top trending search in Google Malaysia, for 2017, is ‘BR1M,’ the government financial aid programme for low-income earners.

Google recently released its annual `Malaysian Year in Search,’ which looks back at the past 12-months through the eyes of collective searches on Google Malaysia to provide a unique perspective of this year’s trending Internet searches.

Next to BR1M is local hit drama, ‘Hero Seorang Cinderella’ while the third spot belongs to ‘SEA Games 2017’, the regional multi-sports event hosted by Malaysia in August.

The remainder of the top five are taken by another local drama series ‘Titian Cinta’ and the public school exam analysis system for teachers and parents, ‘SAPS NKRA’.

“Google search continues to reflect the major events, popular public individuals and hot trends that have collectively made an impact on the lives of Malaysians,” said Zeffri Yusof, Head of Communications and Public Affairs at Google Malaysia.

The rest of the trending top 10 searches are: blockbuster thriller, ‘Fast and Furious 8’, local hit romantic comedy ‘Suamiku Paling Sweet’, Spanish language hit song ‘Despacito’, the voting poll for India’s reality television program, ‘Bigg Boss Vote’ and the newest version of Malaysia’s top-selling car, ‘Myvi 2018’.

The top spot for this year’s Trending People searches went to recently-married actress ‘Izara Aishah’ with the second spot going to ‘Gal Gadot’ for her now iconic role as Wonder Woman.

Singaporean singer-actress, ‘Hannah Delisha’ who starred in local drama Mencintaimu Mr Photographer came in third. In fourth place is ‘Afifah Nasir’ who was in the spotlight over romance-related controversies, followed by singer ‘Aiman Tino’ for his 2017 hit song ‘Ku Hanya Sayang Padamu’.

Rounding off the top 10 trending people of 2017 are: Puskas award-winning footballer ‘Faiz Subri’, Singaporean singer-actor ‘Aliff Aziz’, Asia’s Next Top Model finalist ‘Alicia Amin’, actress ‘Fathia Latiff’ and television personality ‘Mat Over’.

Said Zeffri, “Google is where many Malaysians turn to for discovery and information, and we like to think the year-end lists we’ve compiled reflect the national zeitgeist or ‘spirit of the times.”
