Petronas’ CNY 2025 Film ‘Stay’: A Poignant Tribute to Love, Resilience, and Unity

By The Malketeer

A Story Deeply Rooted in a Mother’s Ultimate Heartfelt Sacrifice

In a powerful start to the Chinese New Year celebrations, Petronas has unveiled Stay, a moving webfilm that explores the themes of love, resilience, and selflessness.

Directed by Caleb Huang, the film is part of Petronas’ Beyond Those Doors festive series, bringing audiences on an emotional journey through the eyes of Xiao Bao, a young boy whose life is forever changed by his mother’s difficult decision.

Set in the picturesque rural landscape of Kuala Selangor, the story captures a poignant slice of life from the 1980s, where economic hardship often required families to make heart-wrenching sacrifices.

Xiao Bao’s mother, hoping for a brighter future for her son, leaves him in the care of more financially stable relatives.

The boy’s tearful plea for her to stay tugs at the audience’s heartstrings, mirroring the struggles of many Malaysians from that era.

Beyond Festivities: Fostering Empathy Across Generations

More than just a festive film, Stay underscores the timeless values of empathy and compassion that form the foundation of Malaysia’s multicultural fabric.

Petronas strategic communications senior general manager Siti Azlina Abdul Latif highlights the film’s core message: “This story reflects how the values of care and unity have shaped and sustained our communities across generations. We hope it inspires Malaysians to continue uplifting one another.”

Through the story of Xiao Bao, the film sheds light on the quiet strength of families who navigate life’s challenges together.

It’s a reminder that Chinese New Year is not merely a celebration of abundance but also an opportunity to honour the resilience and sacrifices that underpin family bonds.

An Invitation to Reflect and Connect

As Stay unfolds, the audience is invited to reflect on the ways in which unity and mutual care have shaped Malaysia’s identity.

Petronas masterfully weaves these themes into a narrative that feels personal yet universal, resonating across cultural boundaries.

The film’s authentic depiction of rural Malaysia during the 1980s, combined with its emotionally charged storytelling, leaves viewers with a profound appreciation for the enduring strength of familial love.

Petronas: Beyond Energy, Fuelling Connections

This webfilm exemplifies Petronas’ continued dedication to fostering meaningful connections among Malaysians.

By celebrating the values that bring people together, the company reinforces its commitment to the nation’s cultural heritage and its role in uniting communities.

Now available on Petronas’ official YouTube channel and Facebook pages, Stay is more than just a festive film—it’s a heartfelt reminder to cherish the sacrifices and love that define our shared humanity.

As we usher in the Chinese New Year, let us carry forward the values of empathy, resilience, and unity that Stay so beautifully illuminates.

Because beyond the celebrations, these values are what truly make us Malaysian.
