“Let’s make it go viral” is not a brief.
But virality is more predictable than most marketers admit. Every few weeks, someone says it in a meeting like they are ordering weather. “Let’s make this one go viral.”
As if virality is luck. As if it falls on the deserving. It does not. The things that spread share a structure, and once you see it, you cannot unsee it.
Start with the part nobody wants to hear: the most viral content is rarely the most original. It is familiar enough to feel safe and new enough to feel worth passing on. That tension is the engine.
Why repetition makes us like things
There is a quiet psychological force under most viral moments: the mere exposure effect. The more we see something, the more we like it. Familiarity reads as comfort, and comfort lowers the cost of paying attention.
This is why the brands that “suddenly” blew up were usually showing up consistently long before. The breakthrough looks like a moment. It was really repetition finally compounding.
The formula…
Four parts. Miss one and you have an ad, not a movement.
Familiar gets you noticed. The twist makes you interesting. Emotion makes you matter. Shareability makes you spread. Drop one and the chain breaks.
Five times this actually worked..
None of these were lightning. They were the same formula, applied with nerve. So stop briefing lightning.
“Make it go viral” is not a strategy, because it skips every step that makes things spread.
The better brief is specific: what is the familiar thing we are starting from, what is our twist, what will people feel, and can they share it without a paragraph of explanation.
Get those four right and you stop praying for reach. You start engineering it. Virality was never an accident. It is a decision most brands are too cautious to make.
