Social Media Power Play in the Making: A Billionaire Takeover in Sight?

US President Donald Trump has expressed openness to the idea of tech magnate Elon Musk, the world’s richest man and owner of social media platform X, acquiring TikTok.

The embattled video-sharing app, owned by Chinese company ByteDance, is at the centre of a heated debate over data security and national interests.

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Trump remarked, “I would be [open to Musk buying TikTok] if he wanted to.”

The statement comes amid growing pressure for TikTok to divest from its Chinese ownership or face a ban in the US.

Trump’s Pause on TikTok’s Ban

TikTok narrowly avoided a complete shutdown in the US over the weekend.

A law requiring ByteDance to sell its US operations or cease activity was put on hold by Trump himself just before taking office for a second term.

The president’s executive order granted a 75-day delay on the law’s implementation, giving TikTok a lifeline to continue operations—at least for now.

To salvage the app’s presence in the US, Trump floated the concept of a 50-50 partnership between ByteDance and “the US,” though specifics remain elusive.

This move signals Trump’s intention to balance national security concerns with the app’s immense popularity among Americans.

Elon Musk: The Game-Changing Factor?

Speculation about Musk’s potential involvement gained traction last week after a report suggested that Chinese officials were considering selling TikTok’s US operations to X.

TikTok firmly denied the claim, but Trump’s comments have reignited conversations about a possible tech billionaire intervention.

Musk, known for his audacious moves in industries ranging from electric vehicles to space exploration, could bring a unique edge to TikTok’s already-dominant presence in the social media ecosystem.

If Musk were to acquire TikTok, it could consolidate his influence over the sector, potentially reshaping how Americans consume and create digital content.

The App That Almost Vanished

TikTok’s users experienced a brief moment of despair when the app shut down late Saturday, anticipating the law’s enforcement.

However, service was restored on Sunday with the cooperation of its server provider, Oracle, a move TikTok credited to Trump’s intervention.

Despite the reprieve, new downloads remain blocked on Apple and Google app stores, leaving TikTok’s future uncertain.

Companies violating the law could face penalties of up to USD 5,000 per user—a costly gamble for both TikTok and its stakeholders.

While Trump’s pause has given TikTok a temporary breather, the clock is ticking.

Musk’s potential involvement adds a dramatic layer to the unfolding saga, blending the intrigue of high-stakes politics with the unpredictability of the tech world.

For now, the fate of TikTok hangs in the balance, with billions of users and dollars at stake.
