The centre of gravity in the global music business is quietly shifting eastward and Universal Music Publishing Group (UMPG) has just made a leadership move that acknowledges precisely that.
In a significant appointment for the region, UMPG has named Sunita Kaur as President, Asia, placing a seasoned digital and media executive at the helm of one of the music industry’s most important growth territories.
Based in Singapore and reporting directly to Jody Gerson, Sunita will oversee UMPG’s operations across Asia, with a remit that stretches far beyond administration.
Her role will focus on strengthening support for songwriters and artists, ensuring they have the right platforms, partnerships and protections to flourish in an increasingly fragmented and digitally-driven music economy.
On paper, it reads like a senior executive appointment. In reality, it feels more like a signal flare.
Asia is no longer simply a market where global music companies sell songs. It is rapidly becoming a source of culture, fandom, intellectual property and artist influence.
Whether it is K-pop dominating playlists, Southeast Asian creators building loyal fan communities, or regional sounds travelling globally through TikTok and streaming platforms, Asia’s music ecosystem has matured into something far more consequential.
And that is precisely where Sunita’s appointment becomes interesting.
Unlike many traditional music executives who grew up within labels or publishing houses, Sunita arrives with a hybrid pedigree spanning both technology and entertainment. A combination increasingly prized in today’s music business.
Before joining UMPG, she spent three years consulting across the music ecosystem, advising platforms, labels and venture capital firms on strategic initiatives while serving as Executive-in-Residence at the Singapore Management University.
Prior to that, she was Senior Vice President for Asia Pacific at Twitch, where she oversaw regional profit-and-loss operations and spearheaded growth across content partnerships, business development and marketing.
That experience matters.
Music publishing in 2026 is no longer just about royalties and copyrights. It is about data, discoverability, creator ecosystems and monetisation models that barely existed a decade ago.
Songs now travel through gaming platforms, livestreams, short-form videos and creator communities long before they hit radio.
In many ways, the next generation of hitmakers may emerge not from recording studios, but from Discord communities, livestream sessions or social platforms where fandom and commerce increasingly overlap.
Sunita herself acknowledged the convergence of these worlds in announcing her new role.
“Having worked across both music and technology throughout my career, joining UMPG feels like a natural and exciting next chapter as those worlds continue to come together in new and powerful ways,” she said.
Her optimism around Asia’s potential was unmistakable.
“Asia is at a defining moment for the global music ecosystem,” she noted, adding that she looked forward to helping drive the next phase of growth and opportunity for songwriters across the region.
For UMPG, the appointment also signals intent.
Gerson described Asia as “one of the most exciting and important regions for the future of music publishing,” underscoring the company’s ambitions to deepen songwriter development and regional partnerships.
The move reflects a larger reality confronting global entertainment businesses: growth increasingly lives in Asia, but succeeding here requires more than scale.
It requires cultural fluency, platform intelligence and an understanding of how audiences behave in digital-first ecosystems.
Sunita Kaur’s challenge now is not merely to oversee operations. It is to help shape how Asian music talent is discovered, protected and exported to the world.
If the industry is paying close attention, this appointment may be remembered as more than a leadership reshuffle. It may well mark another chapter in Asia’s steady rise from music consumer to music powerhouse.
