The NexGen Show Episode 42: I Taught Music Before Advertising

by: Nathalie Tay

Careers are rarely linear, and Ian Lingarajan’s journey is a clear example of how creative paths can evolve in unexpected ways.

In the latest episode of The NexGen Show, the copywriter reflects on his transition from music and teaching into advertising, sharing honest insights on stability, creativity, and what copywriting really entails.

“My first month was definitely eye-opening,” he laughs. “I thought all I would be doing is writing social media captions, but I quickly realised that a copywriter’s role is 20% writing and 80% research and coming up with ideas.”

The episode also explores creative collaboration and chemistry within agency life. While not every partnership is perfect, Ian reflects positively on his experiences.

“My current partner and I compliment each other very well,” he says. “I’m an optimist and he’s a pessimist, so we balance each other out whenever we’re coming up with ideas.”

Hosted by Malaysian advertising veteran Prof. Harmandar Singh, The NexGen Show is a weekly podcast that highlights young talent in the media, marketing, and advertising space.
