Confusion arose recently when anwaribrahim.com, the official website of Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, began redirecting users to unrelated sites including, at one point, a cryptocurrency exchange.
Initial fears of a hack quickly spread online.
However, the truth is far less dramatic: the domain simply expired and wasn’t renewed.
Once a domain lapses, it becomes vulnerable to being acquired by others — including scammers or malicious actors.
To prevent potential misuse, local news platform Newswav stepped in and temporarily purchased the domain.
Their aim? To protect it from falling into the wrong hands and misrepresenting the Prime Minister online.
“We didn’t do this to make a profit,” Newswav stated. “We just wanted to keep the domain safe until PMX’s team can reclaim it.”
The media outlet is now calling on Anwar’s team or anyone with connections to reach out so they can hand the domain back, simply asking for recovery of their costs.
Until then, Newswav says it will hold onto the domain as a public service — and with a bit of good humor.
“Just your everyday news app, occasionally acting as a digital bodyguard,” they added.
