Prudential Malaysia has partnered with Naga DDB Tribal to launch its Chinese New Year short film, The Promise, which explores the idea of true wealth by challenging conventional notions of riches.
Set against a festive season often associated with material abundance, the film shifts focus to remind viewers that the greatest form of wealth lies in being able to journey through life alongside those who matter.
The film centres on a conversation between two characters conflicted by wealth: a young man uncertain about his ability to marry and provide for his girlfriend, and the God of Prosperity, who begins to question his purpose as a giver of fortune. What unfolds is an introspective exchange that leads both of them to a realisation about the deeper meaning of wealth.
The message is conveyed through the symbolism of the Chinese Ruyi knot, a festive motif traditionally associated with blessings and good fortune. In the film, the knot becomes a visual metaphor for true wealth, where its interwoven loops are reframed as the bonds and relationships shared with our loved ones.
“The Promise reflects Prudential Malaysia’s role as a trusted partner committed to journeying alongside Malaysians through life’s evolving milestones for over 100 years,” said Angeline Tung, Head of Brand, Marketing & Communications, Prudential Assurance Malaysia Berhad. “By spotlighting the theme of true wealth, it reinforces our mission in supporting our customers as a long-term partner.”
Alvin Teoh, Chief Creative Officer, Naga DDB Tribal, added, “We wanted to tap into the wisdom and lessons found in Chinese culture and symbols that are often forgotten today, and weave them into a simple story of two strangers accidentally meeting at an appointed moment in time, engaging in a soul-bearing dialogue that stays with audiences long after they’ve seen the film.”
The film contrasts the festive season’s typical lavish imagery. Instead, it takes a more intimate approach that underscores the message.
The Promise is now live on Prudential Malaysia’s YouTube page and across its other social media platforms, including Instagram and Facebook.
