Malaysia is quickly establishing itself as a top destination for data centre investments in Southeast Asia, with global tech giants attracted by its stable governance, clear digital policies, and strong public-private collaboration.

Speaking at the Datacentre and Cloud Infra Summit (DCCI) 2025, Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) CEO Anuar Fariz Fadzil credited investor confidence to the country’s reliable infrastructure, low disaster risk, and commitment to sustainability.

Malaysia currently hosts 54 operational data centres, with 24 more underway. Major players like Microsoft, Google, ByteDance, and Nvidia have already expanded their footprint, with Google’s US$2 billion hyperscale facility in Port Dickson progressing on schedule.

From January to mid-April 2025, over RM9.9 billion worth of data centre and cloud projects — more than 60% of Malaysia Digital (MD) investments — were approved, part of a total RM16.2 billion in digital investments. These initiatives are expected to generate thousands of high-skilled jobs and broaden digital access nationwide.

Beyond key hubs like Johor and Cyberjaya, growth is accelerating in Port Dickson, Sabah, and Sarawak. Anuar also emphasized Malaysia’s commitment to ESG principles and a 40% renewable energy target by 2035 as key to attracting sustainable investments.

Tradepass director Praveen Venu praised the government’s leadership, noting Malaysia’s strategic digital roadmap and inclusive growth agenda.
