Astro Audio has removed three Era FM radio DJs from the airwaves following public outrage over a controversial video shared on the station’s social media platforms.
The move comes in response to backlash over a video featuring the 3 Pagi Era presenters mimicking the kavadi dance, a sacred Hindu ritual performed during Thaipusam in devotion to Lord Murugan.
The clip, which showed the DJs chanting “Vel Vel” while laughing, was widely condemned as disrespectful to Hindu traditions.
The three DJs — Nabil Ahmad, Azad Jasmin, and Radin Amir Effendi Ahmad Aruani — have since issued a public apology acknowledging their mistake and the insensitivity of their actions.
Astro Audio also expressed regret over the incident, recognizing the disappointment and hurt caused by the video.
“Our announcers have acknowledged their mistake and have issued a public apology. As a responsible broadcaster, we take this matter seriously.”
“After careful consideration, we have decided to take the three individuals off-air until further notice while we review the situation internally,” it said in a statement today.
Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil has since instructed the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission to conduct a full investigation and summon Astro and ERA FM’s management for an explanation.
The company added that it is working closely with authorities to ensure full compliance with media regulations, saying it would continue to listen, learn and improve.
“We are taking steps to strengthen our content review processes to ensure that we continue to create programming that reflects the values and expectations of our audience,” it said.
