Laxshmaan Balakrishnan has been obsessed with advertising since he was a child.
“It has been my passion ever since I was five or six years old,” he explains. “I didn’t understand why at the time, but I was mesmerised by how commercials were able to condense a story into 15 to 30 seconds.”
Inspired by the greats like David Ogilvy and Howard Gossage, Laxshmaan sees advertising as the art of persuasion, where the true impact lies in understanding people and their interests.
In Episode 16 of The NexGen Show, he speaks further on the evolving landscape of consumer behaviour, the rise of influencer marketing, and the invasion of AI-assisted writing tools like ChatGPT.
Despite the hurdles in his way, Laxshmaan continues to champion the craft of copywriting as a powerful, emotive force.
“More and more people sound the same. Everyone’s putting out the same messaging, the same format,” he says. “This goes to show that honing your craft is still important, because it teaches you how to approach things differently.”
Hosted by Malaysian advertising industry Prof. Harmandar Singh, The NexGen Show is a weekly podcast spotlighting young talent in the marketing, media, and communications space.
