The NexGen Show Episode 48: Chameleons Or Copywriters?

by: Nathalie Tay

The path into advertising is rarely linear, and for young copywriter Rudy, the journey has included theatre studies, film production, and even a stint behind the bar.

In his episode of The NexGen Show, Rudy shares how a mix of curiosity, circumstance and a push from his family eventually led him into the world of advertising — an industry he says has been unexpectedly enjoyable.

“I initially wanted to be an actor, but I didn’t really want to act in Malaysia,” he confesses. “So I went into film production without knowing what it was, but I ended up loving it.”

After spending two years between production and bartending, Rudy eventually found himself drawn towards copywriting. The work, he discovered, scratched the same creative itch as storytelling on screen.

“My personal dream is to become a multidisciplinary artist. I would eventually love to try writing films or direct,” he shares. “But right now, I weirdly love advertising. It’s been very generous to me and it’s been very fun.”

The conversation also turns to artificial intelligence and its growing influence on writing. Rudy believes tools like ChatGPT are already developing a recognizable voice.

“ChatGPT has sort of been trained to speak a certain way, and it’ll even speak the way you want it to as well,” he says. “But sometimes it’s a bit sneaky. When you’re trying to discuss things with it, it’ll just start agreeing with you.”
