Accelerating Digital Transformation in Malaysia
Oracle’s decision to invest US$6.5 billion (RM27 billion) to establish its first public cloud region in Malaysia marks a significant milestone in the country’s digital landscape.
As the demand for AI, data analytics, and cloud services accelerates, Oracle joins a growing list of global tech giants that have turned their attention to Southeast Asia.
Microsoft, Nvidia, Google, and ByteDance have already committed billions to Malaysia, creating a boom in digital infrastructure.
Oracle’s investment now surpasses the US$6.2 billion commitment made by Amazon Web Services (AWS) last year.
Empowering Local Innovation
With this new cloud region, Oracle aims to support Malaysian organisations, including government agencies, financial institutions, and companies in the airline and hospitality sectors.
By migrating their workloads to the cloud and modernising applications, businesses can leverage Oracle’s data, analytics, and AI capabilities.
According to Garrett Ilg, Oracle’s Executive Vice President for Japan and Asia Pacific, these services will help customers adopt faster, more cost-effective, and controlled processes.
Southeast Asia: A Hotbed for Cloud Growth
Oracle’s expansion into Malaysia is part of a broader strategy to grow its cloud infrastructure across Southeast Asia, where the company already has facilities in Singapore.
This move highlights the growing importance of the region as a digital hub.
Chris Chelliah, Oracle’s Senior Vice President for technology and customer strategy, emphasised that Malaysia’s growth potential, driven by its digital and AI sectors, made it a prime location for further development.
Other tech giants are also betting big on Southeast Asia, with Google’s recent US$2 billion data centre in Malaysia and Amazon’s US$9 billion investment in Singapore.
Malaysia: A Key Player in the Global Cloud Race
As Oracle aims to surpass US$100 billion in revenue by fiscal 2029, its cloud regions in Malaysia and Southeast Asia will be instrumental in this growth.
The firm’s expansion reflects the larger trend of tech companies flocking to the region as businesses and governments adopt AI-driven solutions.
With Malaysia at the forefront of this digital transformation, the nation is positioning itself as a key player in the global cloud computing race.
This investment not only accelerates Oracle’s presence but also cements Malaysia’s role as a crucial player in the tech-driven future of Southeast Asia.
