Misbehave and you’re out, no more warnings for ill mannered executives

NO MORE SECOND CHANCES FOR MISBEHAVING EXECUTIVES

Where once a slap on the wrist may have sufficed, today badly behaved executives are booted out.

Paramount Television fired its president Amy Powell over insensitive comments about race on July 19th despite her protestations. She is currently fighting this with a lawsuit.

Also in July this year, founder of Papa John’s, John Schnatter, was forced to resign for using the n-word during a conference call on a training session in May this year.

The call, which was between Papa John’s execs and a marketing agency, was a “role-playing exercise” for Schnatter in an effort to prevent future PR screw-ups.

According to an unidentified source, Schnatter was asked how he planned to “distance himself from racist groups” on the internet. “Colonel Sanders called blacks n*****s” and didn’t face backlash,” he allegedly answered.

He also mentioned that, while growing up in Indiana, people would drag African-Americans from trucks until they died. Multiple people on the call were offended by these remarks, although the troubling memories were apparently brought up by Schnatter to demonstrate how anti-racist he is.

The marketing agency eventually terminated their contract with Papa John’s.

In June, Netflix’s Jonathan Friedland got sacked for using the same word in front of colleagues at least twice. Ironically he was the company’s chief communications officer.

Sources say that Friedland used the N-word in a meeting with other Netflix staffers, some of whom later reported the incident.

Netflix chief executive officer Reed Hastings sent a companywide email explaining that Friedland had been fired shortly after.

These are only the latest bigwigs to go in a line of departures linked to “personal misconduct”.

Harvey Weinstein’s dismissal last October has led to a flurry of people being sacked due to sexual misconduct including 12 executives at Nike, several senior men in entertainment and at least one executive at Bank of America.

Moving from sexual misconduct, there is now a clamping down on obnoxious or inappropriate behavior that is not just sexually related but includes insensitivity and racial prejudice.

According to a consultancy agency, management boards are now holding people accountable to higher standards not just by looking at how they treat people but also how they talk to and about them.
