ASICS: We’re Blocking Online Bullies So Our Athletes Feel Free To Perform At Their Best

In an era where social media has become an integral part of an athlete’s life, the dark side of online engagement has emerged as a significant threat to their mental health.

Recognising this growing concern, sportswear brand ASICS has taken a bold step forward in safeguarding its sponsored athletes from the perils of cyberbullying and online harassment.

A Shield Against Digital Abuse

ASICS has partnered with data science company Signify to offer its athletes access to the AI-driven Threat Matrix service.

This innovative technology acts as a digital shield, helping to prevent and manage abuse on social media platforms.

By implementing this service, ASICS aims to create a safer online environment for athletes, allowing them to engage with their audiences without fear of harassment.

The initiative comes as a response to alarming research indicating a rise in online abuse directed at athletes.

By providing this protective measure, ASICS demonstrates its commitment to supporting the holistic wellbeing of its sponsored individuals.

A Holistic Approach to Athlete Support

This cybersecurity initiative is part of ASICS’ broader ‘Mind and Body Athlete Support Programme’.

The programme offers a range of services designed to enhance both the physical and mental wellbeing of athletes, as well as promote clean sport.

It represents a unique approach to athlete support, focusing on personal and professional development beyond mere physical performance.

“While we’re proud to support athletes to win and break records, we don’t believe in winning at all costs. The physical and mental wellbeing of athletes is more important than any podium place,” said Olivier Mignon, Global Head of Sports Marketing at ASICS.

The Athlete’s Perspective: A Voice from the Front Lines

Three-time Olympian and Commonwealth Games champion Eilish McColgan shared her experiences with online abuse, highlighting the prevalence and impact of such harassment on athletes.

McColgan revealed that she receives a barrage of abusive messages, particularly during competitions, with comments often focused on her body rather than her performance.

“The constant abuse that athletes face is unacceptable, and it’s getting worse,” McColgan stated, expressing gratitude for ASICS’ initiative to help block and remove harmful content.

A Sound Mind in a Sound Body: ASICS’ Core Philosophy in Action

ASICS’ commitment to athlete wellbeing is deeply rooted in its founding philosophy.

The company’s name is an acronym derived from the Latin phrase “Anima Sana In Corpore Sano,” meaning “a Sound Mind in a Sound Body.”

This latest initiative is a testament to ASICS’ dedication to upholding this principle in the modern digital landscape.

The Future of Athlete Protection

As online harassment continues to pose a threat to athletes’ mental health, ASICS’ proactive approach sets a precedent for the sports industry.

By partnering with technology experts like Signify, the company paves the way for more comprehensive athlete support systems that address the challenges of the digital age.

Jonathan Hirshler, Signify CEO, expressed enthusiasm for the collaboration, noting the alignment between ASICS’ brand values and Signify’s mission to protect overall athlete wellbeing.
