Officially launched in December 2009, the Malaysian Digital Association (MDA) organizes Digital Wednesday on the first Wednesday of every month as a networking function for the industry.
Advertlets is an Asian blog advertising network that connects bloggers with advertisers across Malaysia & Singapore. Goodie bags were given out to the attendees, with multi-function Advertlets.com pens, Biotherm skin care samples as well as cupcakes made especially for the event.
Starting at 7:30 pm, the heavy rain earlier that day did not dampen attendance or spirits, as this event saw probably the largest Digital Wednesday turnout ever, with senior representatives from media agencies including Andreas Vogiatzakis of OMG, Chen Yip Fan of Carat, Desmond Wong of Zenith, and Yanti Nading of Starcom.
Representatives from digital media and web agencies were also aplenty, with attendees from Yahoo!, Unseen TV, XM, Ogilvy One, Catcha Digital, Trinity Wizards & Pudding Media. On the client side, Jacy Wong of L'oreal, Khairul Syahar of MAS and Jonathan of The Truly Loving Company & Biresh Vrajlal of Tune Hotels were also present.
The night started with a short speech by Pawan Goyal, Managing Director of Tribal Fusion, drinks sponsor for the event.
Some wacky drinking games were on the entertainment list of the night , hosted by none other than Andrea Fonseka— Advertlets Blogger, Miss Malaysia Universe 2004 & 2008's FHM Singapore's Sexiest Woman. Sporting male participants from OMG, Group M and Media 2.0 downed an eclectic concoction of chilli sauce, fruit juice and beer in mere seconds. Blessed with a strong-as-steel esophagus, Rene Menezes from Media 2.0 emerged as the winner, taking home the grand prize of a Biotherm Skincare hamper.
Celebrity blogger Belinda Chee of belindachee.com also took the stage to talk a bit about her experience as a celebrity and travel blogger so far, relating opportunities of working with brands such as RHB Bank and Tourism Australia through Advertlets.com.
She then invited the founder and Managing Director of Advertlets.com, Josh Lim, to come up on stage. In his opening remarks, Lim exclaimed, "It is good to see everyone in the industry come together, and even better to be a part of it!”
Lim then shared his positive growth experience as a media owner, saying that while they first started, clients would ask what they could get for RM2000. But times have since changed. He related, “Now, they are allocating budgets for us which are close to rates charged by established mediums such by radio and magazines.”
“It seriously sucks that digital media has gained only 1% of the advertising expenditure in Malaysia so far. Here's to us changing that together!", Lim said, which was met with cheers from the crowd.
The drinking and networking continued late into the night, with a large portion of attendees staying until 1 am. Some, however, only left when Bar Savahn Too finally closed for the night.
