PETALING JAYA: MACRO, the Malaysian Association of Commercial Radio Operators, will once again acknowledge radio advertisers and clients in their forthcoming Radio Fest Gala night on the 7th Dec 2007 at One World Hotel, Bandar Utama.
Studying Nielsen’s Radio Audience Measurement (RAM) Survey 2, 2007, President of MACRO (Malaysian Association of Commercial Radio Operators), Dato’ Borhanuddin Osman believes there is a lot of room for growth in the radio industry.
The overall analysis records 90% listenership per week out of the total population of individuals aged 10 years and above in Peninsular Malaysia. Radio reaches 93% of Malays, while 84% of Chinese and 90% of Indians and others.
Time Spent Listening (TSL), which is the other key indicator, grew to almost 24 hours per week which means people now spend more time on radio because of better radio programming. The Chinese and Bilingual channels contributed the most to the total TSL.
Radio AdEx totaling RM178.1 million as of year to date September 2007 achieved double-digit growth of 23.9% over the same period last year, exceeding that of total radio AdEx and traditional mass media growth. Radio increases to 5.3% share of total AdEx, comparing to the 2% back in 1991. Radio AdEx has been growing at an average rate of 8.5% for the financial years from 2003 to 2007. The growth in radio AdEx is largely dependent on a growing Malaysian economy which has been positive during the period. As an international benchmark, countries like Australia and Singapore has radio AdEx share of 8 – 9%.
The radio industry which has 52 participants is now more aggressive than ever. It sees individual stations marketing itself heavily via above and below the line advertising. Radio operators are also constantly upgrading systems to stay on top of the game. With listeners becoming more discerning and spoilt for choice, the station that provides continuous entertainment and flawless coverage wins their interest. This healthy competition provides the people more options, hence enriching their lives with information and entertainment.
