Maxis Communications Berhad (“Maxis”) has announced that their Voice Portal service, developed with OnMobile, has hit the 150,000 unique user mark since the service was launched earlier this month.

Approximately 35% of the our customer base access the Maxis WAP Portal for advanced data services such as music and games downloads, news updates and internet browsing on the mobile phone. This truly underlines the growing demand for mobile data services,” said Maxis’ Head of Strategy and Head of New Businesses, Dr. Nikolai Dobberstein at the Voice Portal media briefing at the Maxis Centre in KLCC on August 27th.

The new Voice Portal is a complementary service to the Maxis WAP Portal, giving customers quicker, easier access to our large catalogue of content-rich data products. We are happy with the high user acceptance of the service and expect the Voice Portal service to drive further data usage for Maxis in the coming months,” he added.

The Maxis Voice Portal is a first in Malaysia service that recognises a customer’s voice command and accords mobile content and services based on voice instructions. The Voice Portal is an easy to use service and allows customers to sample and purchase Maxis mobile content through voice navigational prompts.

Customers can purchase content such as music and jokes, listen to breaking news reports as well as get quick updates on Maxis and Hotlink related consumer promotions and events. The Voice Portal service was launched by Maxis in August, and has received positive feedback from customers. There have been over 300,000 calls made to the portal over the month.

Maxis Head of Product Development and Infotainment Services, T. Kugan, said, “Interactive voice services are a huge success in countries such as India and Australia. It was found that the popularity of the service in these countries is due to the user-friendliness of the voice recognition feature and the easy-to-follow instructions of the service.” He continued, “Similarly, the Maxis Voice Portal has been designed to help first time data users access a suite of Maxis mobile entertainment services. Given the ease of use of the Voice Portal and the exciting content available, we believe that the Voice Portal will be the gateway to access a whole range of entertainment services in the future.”

What Else Is On?

Maxis has added exciting new content to its Voice Portal service this week. Customers can now enjoy jokes from the popular Singaporean sitcom character Phua Chu Kang (commonly know as PCK). The character, played by Gurmit Singh, is self-proclaimed to be the “best contractor in Singapore, JB and some say Batam”, and he’ll record jokes specifically for the Maxis Voice Portal. Fans of PCK can expect fresh jokes on a weekly basis.

Also available from this week on the Maxis Voice Portal are jokes from the Zeroes series aired on the ever-popular hitz.fm Morning Crew with JJ & Rudy, a breakfast radio show on Malaysia’s No. 1 Hit Station, hitz.fm. Zeroes is the localised spoof of the American Emmy-nominated series Heroes. Contrary to the super-human abilities of Heroes, the characters of Zeroes are less than ordinary and make light of the simple things in life. The radio series, which has a large fan base in Malaysia, is only available for listening on the Maxis Voice Portal.

In conjunction with the upcoming Ramadan period, Maxis has launched the Islamic Zone on Voice Portal. Customers can call the portal to listen to recitation of Doa Harian and Zikir, as well as listen to short religious lectures.

To enjoy the service, customers can dial 13232 from their Maxis and Hotlink mobile phones and listen to what’s on offer. The call charge for the service is RM1 per minute. Purchase of downloadable content such as music ringtones will be charged separately based on cost of content.
