The television commercial is directed by one of Singapore’s acclaimed directors, Royston Tan, of local movie hits 881 and 12 Lotus. The commercial begins with a young boy talking to a man seated behind an office desk about preventing an accident if only he had shown more care. In response, the man’s inner voice of reason surfaces in an attempt to justify his actions. As the office employee heads out to his car, the child appears again; this time in the passenger seat where he points out that it is futile to pretend that he was not the cause of the accident. This time the man becomes introspective and regrets making certain assumptions.

In the following scene, the man is seen arriving at a hospital and peering into a ward where an injured man is seen lying on a hospital bed with his wife and young son next to him. It then becomes apparent that the young boy was a manifestation of the man’s own guilty conscience and it was that guilt that had driven him to visit an injured employee under his supervision at the workplace. In his speech at the launch of the National WSH Campaign on 26 April 2012, Mr Heng Chiang Ngee, Acting Chairman of the WSH Council said, “From studies into the causes of accidents, we realise that is it very common for “assumptions” to be made by stakeholders involved. The “assumption” that safety has been taken care of or is the responsibility of someone else is a key contributing factor for many accidents. “The idea behind the TVC was to communicate that it is everyone’s responsibility when accidents happen in the workplace – be it at the office or a building site. According to him, the contents of the magazine appeared to focus more on promoting other countries.

Replying to a supplementary question by Senator Mumtaz Md Nawi who wanted to know whether the ministry would also publish the magazine in Arabic to attract more tourists from the Middle East, he said there was such a version in circulation in such countries, albeit not extensively.

"The 21st century has been completely transformed by social media, and we need to ensure we use it to bring the tourism industry forward," she said in opening the first International Tourism Bloggers Conference and Awards 2012.

More than 10,000 people voted online for the 342 nominees in 16 categories. Ng said many Malaysians were quickly becoming tech-savvy, with 12 million people connected to the internet, compared with 20,000 in 1995.

"The aim is to have 75% of the population connected and using new media by 2015.

"With democratisation of information and speed of communication today, we need to ensure people are connected and that bloggers are talking about us if we want to continue doing well as a tourist destination."

Last year, the ministry spent US$600,000 (RM1.8 million) on digital marketing and branding for six tourism event campaigns, drawing flak from various quarters, who said the expenses were unnecessarily high.

A day after Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg kicked off the roadshow for next week’s IPO in New York, the young billionaire yesterday was a no-show at a Hub event where hundreds of potential investors and analysts were left waiting in line for more than an hour.

Zuckerberg, who turns 28 on Monday, did not attend the main presentation at the Four Seasons, opting instead for a handful of private powwows with large firms such as Fidelity Investments.

“The fear of many investors is that certain investors are disadvantaged if there is preferential information flow,” Michael Greeley, general partner of Flybridge Capital Partners, told the Herald. “It’s very unorthodox for the CEO not to be out meeting with all investors. A great CEO should do many things well, and one of them is investor relations.”

KUALA LUMPUR: The Tourism Ministry will place increased emphasis on social media to promote Malaysia's tourist attractions.

This move was an important step as the traditional methods of advertising and promoting the country's tourist sites were no longer effective, said minister Datuk Seri Dr Ng Yen Yen.

She said the ministry would review its tourism promotional strategies by increasing its focus on social media to promote tourism activities.

“Australia is spending A$150mil (RM465mil) for three years.

“The Philippines spends US$7.2mil (RM22mil) and Thailand is spending 40% of its tourism budget on social media.

“In comparison, Malaysia has only spent RM1.8mil on six Facebook campaigns over a year,” she said after opening the inaugural Malaysia International Tourism Bloggers Conference and Awards here yesterday.

"I think creative people are interesting," she clarified. "I think creative departments are shit."

With that, fellow panelist Gerry Graf—the only man in a 100-yard radius wearing a tie (with tennis shoes, to be fair)—declared "I'm done!" and walked off stage right, with a wave. At first it seemed that he had to be joking, but he didn't come back. He was so offended by the statement "creative departments are shit" that he stormed off the stage, in a huff, never to return*. There was a bit of nervous laughter, and the panel wrapped up without him. Impolite, yes. But he had taken a stand on behalf of his cherished principle: creativity is not something to be mocked.

Market research firm GfK Asia, which focuses on consumer electronics, released its smartphone estimate for South-East Asia at the end of last month. What really caught my eye was the 88 per cent smartphone penetration in Malaysia.

The number of businesses outsourcing traditional marketing functions is expected to jump over the next 12 to 24 months from 9% currently to 21%, according to IBM’s ‘Australian Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) Research 2012’.

The report, built from a survey of 216 businesses, rates traditional marketing as the fourth most outsourced business process, ahead of digital marketing, which is currently outsourced by a surprisingly low 6% of businesses. Intention to outsource online  marketing over the next year or two is also lower than for traditional, with only 17% anticipating that they will seek external providers.

KUALA LUMPUR: Omnicom Media Group (OMG) managing director Andreas Vogiatzakis expects to see at least a 10% to 15% increase in advertising expenditure (adex) in Malaysia this year.

On the first quarter (Q1) adex, Vogiatzakis said: “We've seen it picking up for sure.

“Q1 was very soft, but that was expected due to the Chinese New Year and the Western New Year holidays. I do believe that overall in the year, things will definitely be picking up. We have the Euro Cup (European Football Championship 2012), the Olympics, and also the potential general election in 2012. So by year-end things will look much rosier.”

Yesterday, OMD Malaysia through OMD Predicts, predicted that in three years' time, listening to consumers in real time will replace surveys in terms of how feedbacks and insights are gathered. Other predictions include that brands need to find definite roles as contribution will define communication; and tools that are now emerging for Internet real-time bidding will be used in television by 2015.

27.6 million unique browsers, attributing to almost 8 percent increase compared to the previous month, were collected on websites in Malaysia in the month ending March 2012. Online Consumer Confidence in Malaysia rebounded 6 points to an index of 107 in the first quarter of 2012 according to the latest global online consumer confidence findings from Nielsen, a leading global provider of information and insights into what consumers watch and buy. Malaysia ranked seventh (along with Thailand) among the 56 countries surveyed in terms of confidence level. Malaysia was at tenth position last quarter. 

The Nielsen Global Online Consumer Confidence Survey, established in 2005, tracks consumer confidence, major concerns and spending intentions among more than 28,000 Internet consumers in 56 countries. Consumer confidence levels above and below a baseline of 100 indicate degrees of optimism and pessimism.

Astro is satisfied that there is no basis whatsoever for any of these allegations, which are consistent with the pattern of behavior of the Lippo Group, where allegations of criminal misconduct are repeatedly raised against Astro, its senior executives and others, in what appears to be an attempt to lend credibility or to provide a basis for the Lippo Group to challenge the enforcement of an Award in favour of Astro for the sum of US$300 million, in Indonesia, and so avoid having to pay Astro.

The IAB released its big report on internet advertising. One data point it bragged about was, "Internet advertising surpasses Cable TV in ad revenue." It also showed that the Internet was only $7 billion behind broadcast TV advertising.
