THE Malaysian advertising market enjoyed overall growth of 13% in 2008 at RM6.2 billion due to strong performance in the first half of the year, which helped to counter the effects of the economic slowdown in the second half, according to the latest report from The Nielsen Company.

The growth was driven by terrestrial TV (+20%), newspapers (+8%), radio (+21%) and point-of-sale (+28%). Newspapers and terrestrial TV continue to command the bulk of total advertising across the medium measured, with shares of 54% and 35% respectively, followed by radio (5%). Other media such as magazines, outdoor, point-of-sale, Internet and cinema make up the rest of the 6% share.

The Nielsen Co, in its report on advertising expenditure (adex), said that a strong performance in the first half of last year helped counter the effects of an economic slowdown in the latter half.

Last year's growth was driven by terrestrial television, which saw a 20 per cent rise in adex; newspapers, up 8 per cent; radio, up 21 per cent; and point-of-sale, up 28 per cent.

"Events like the general election in March, Euro 2008 in June, Beijing Olympics in August, local festivals and aggressive product promotions fuelled the solid growth," said Andrea Douglas, Nielsen's executive director of media service for Malaysia.

JAKARTA - Plans to launch a 'Made in Indonesia' decree, which will make it compulsory for nearly four million civil servants in Indonesia to use local products ranging from footwear to heavy machinery, is not likely to impact foreign brands in the country.

Most in the Indonesian ad industry think that the decree does not reflect an anti-foreign sentiment in the country and will have no palpable impact on international brands.

Brian Estes, CEO of DDB Brainstorm said: “The Government’s intention is positive but it has not been projected that way. It’s not an anti-foreign sentiment and simply means that there is going to be a need to rely on domestic consumption.”

NEW YORK (AdAge.com) -- In case you weren't sure, it really is worse than you thought. In a new survey conducted by the Association of National Advertisers and released today, 77% of marketers indicated that they plan to reduce their advertising campaigns' media budgets. That staggeringly high number is an ominous sign of things to come.

"There's no good news in this report all," said ANA President-CEO Bob Liodice. "This is not good for advertisers, this is not good for agencies, and it's certainly not good for media."

Interpublic Group has become the first of the major global communications groups to open a business in Asia-Pacific specializing in media barter – one way advertisers can strengthen media budgets, swapping impaired assets they would normally sell at a discount for their full value in media space.

Driven by demand from Interpublic’s global clients, who already use the media barter service in North America and the UK, the move is part of a global expansion for the group’s media barter arm, with new offices also opening in Latin America and Western Europe. The business is also changing its name, from Magna Global Trading to Orion Trading
NEW YORK (AdAge.com) -- Maurice Levy finds the economic downturn exciting. In a wide-ranging discussion a few hours after Publicis Groupe's earnings presentation, the rather upbeat CEO pointed out that the company's stock price was up 6.57%; spoke candidly about the possibilities of layoffs and the shutdown of Honeyshed; and told Ad Age what he "loves" about the recession.

Ad Age: How did 2008 compare with 2007?
Mr. Levy: When you compare our numbers to Omnicom's earnings numbers, you see that there are areas where we performed much better than them, and we did better than we did in 2007 because of three things we did last year. First, we made a great strategic move by acquiring Digitas and then creating VivaKi, which gives us a strong leading position in the field of digital, the only field growing today. Secondly, we strengthened our position in

In a move that could set off a new competitive arms race on Madison Avenue, WPP's GroupM unit has struck a deal with Nielsen Co. for a new "real-time" commercial tracking system that will put competitive advertising analysis on a hair trigger. The new system, aptly dubbed KeepingTrac, will enable GroupM's media shops to evaluate TV ad campaigns in-flight, and on-on-the-fly, rather than waiting weeks to conduct post-analyses, the way traditional media buys have been evaluated and re-adjusted in the marketplace.
SUNNYVALE, California: Online search adspend fell by 8% year-on-year in the US in Q4 2008 according to Efficient Frontier, a search engine marketing firm, as the automotive, financial and retail sectors made substantial cutbacks. Though most of the rumblings are unofficial, but you can second guess how rumours come true in fascinating Malaysia. It is widely believed that all agencies that were appointed to the business have been ‘on hold’ and only two players are actively working on the account now - TBWA-ISC\ Malaysia and SEN Media. Most of other agencies say that work has come to a standstill. There has been no word on what is happening and agencies have yet to be formally notified.
